Retired (Navy) Petty Officer First Class Lafayette "Dave" Davis, 72, of 1717 Hwy 111 North died Thursday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro. The Rev. Edward Tatum will officiate. Interment with full military honors will be in Wayne Memorial Park.

Mr. Davis was born in Wayne County to the late Louis and Lizzie Kornegay Holt Davis. He attended Ray of Hope Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church and was a member of its Sunday school. He was retired from the United States Navy after 23 years of service. His service decorations and medals included the National Defense Service Medal and the Meritorious Unit Commendation Award. Mr. Davis was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans and the Retired Military Alliance. He also was retired from the state of North Carolina after 20 years of service including positions with the City of Goldsboro Fire Department and Cherry Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma W. Davis; one son, Danny R. Worrell of Goldsboro; five daughters, Shelia Gayle Worrell of Perry, Ga., Martha Martin Massey, Alicia Louise Jones, Nancy Deanne West, and Sara Dawn Hare all of Goldsboro; six brothers, Rudolph Davis of Jasper, Texas, Durant Davis of Amelia, Va., Lynwood Davis of Triangle, Va., Jimmy Davis of Goldsboro, Jonathan Davis of Grantham and Charles R. Davis of Hope Valley, R.I.; four sisters, Leona Langston of Pikeville, Joyce Pearce of Rosewood, Geraldine Moore of Princeton and Linda Hardy of Saulston; sixteen grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at Howell Funeral Home & Crematory and other times at the residence.
