JAMES A. BYRD

FAISON -- James A. Byrd, 84, died Tuesday in Brunswick Cove Nursing Center after a six-year battle with cancer.

A memorial service will be held tonight at 7 in the chapel of Community Funeral Home. The family will receive friends afterward. A private burial will be held at a later date.

Mr. Byrd was born in Harnett County on Sept. 2, 1919, to Willie Austin and Mary Dale Byrd. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was retired from Burlington Industries. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Faison, Warsaw Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9810, and Woodmen of the World.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Edna Newsome Byrd; one son, Stephen C. Byrd, and his wife, Janice P. Byrd, of Leland; one grandson, Stephen W. Byrd and his wife, Susan S. Byrd, of Leland; one sister, Dot Sawyer, and her husband, Marvin Sawyer, of Kenansville; and two brothers, Richard Byrd, and his wife, Juanita, of Mount Airy, and Billy Byrd of Greenville.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Byrd of Warsaw and Robert Byrd of Wilmington; and three sisters, Madeline Beasley of Goldsboro, Ruby Carlton of Hollywood, Fla., and Irene Newhook of Jacksonville, Fla.
