ADELL F. HOWELL
Adell Ford Howell died Monday in Seattle, Wash.
She was born on March 31, 1919, in Greene County to the late Lenzy and Mary Ford. She was a member and deaconess at Barnes Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on numerous committees, organizing and implementing programs for the youth. Her nursing career spanned over 40 years and included positions at Cherry Hospital and Wayne Memorial Hospital. She was a member and Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Lady Love Chapter #6, and was named the NAACP Mother of the Year for her door-to-door campaigning to register people to vote.
After moving to Seattle, Wash., in 1998 to be near her children, she became a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and was active in the Central Area Senior Citizens Program.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vasco Howell, and is survived by four daughters, Dr. Betty Howell Gray and Ina G. Howell of Seattle, Wash., Mary L. Hickman of Washington, D.C., and Ernestine Chavis of Laurelton, N.Y.; a brother, Lenzy Ford; and eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held today at 11 a.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Seattle.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, June 8, at 1 p.m. at at Best Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Goldsboro.
The family will receive friends on Monday, June 7, from 7 until 9 p.m. at Hamilton Funeral Chapel, and at other times at 103 Amberwood Lane in Goldsboro.
In lieu of flowers, donations maybe made to the Eastern Star Gleaners, Lady Love Chapter #6 Scholarship Fund for Youth, and to Barnes Chapel Church Building Fund.
