A Goldsboro police K-9 was injured and needed five stitches after having glass and debris kicked in its face during an arrest Sunday.

Larry Ray Barnes, 35, of 904 Deveraux St., is charged with breaking or entering, assault on a law enforcement agency animal, an assistance animal or a search and rescue animal, two counts of resisting a public officer, two counts of injury to personal property and was also charged with five counts of order for arrest.

Barnes was wanted on several outstanding warrants.

Officers found him Sunday at a home on Murray Street at about 5:40 p.m., and Barnes ran away.

"We were actually assisting probation and parole trying to serve a probation violation against him," said Maj. Dwayne Dean, head of the Goldsboro Police Department's Operations Bureau.

Police had to chase him through several yards and fences.

During the foot chase Barnes reportedly plowed through a vinyl fence, damaging the vinyl boards.

Barnes ran to a garage behind 204 A St. and hid inside after finding it unlocked.

A police report said he then kicked out a garage window in an attempt to escape.

When he did this, glass hit Goldsboro K-9 Ghost's mouth and injured the dog.

Barnes did not escape and was arrested inside the garage.

A press release said Ghost was taken to an emergency veterinarian in Wilson for treatment.

Ghost's handler, officer Tom Collins, was able to use equipment from medical bags to give the dog field treatment before arriving at the veterinarian's office, the release said.

Dean said the department elected to take Ghost out of service for this week to give him time to rest after being injured.

"He's doing fine," Dean said. "They stitched him up and he's responded well to the treatment."

Barnes was put in the Wayne County Jail under a $15,400 secured bond.
