Child's death prompts inquiry

Investigators at the Wayne County Sheriff's Office are looking into the death of an 21-month-old Pikeville child.
The child died Monday at Wayne Memorial Hospital. The results of a preliminary autopsy show that the child died of a traumatic injury. It is currently unknown if the injury to the child was accidental or intentional, investigators said.
The child's mother, Donnisha Lynette Bryant of Pikeville, brought the child into the hospital's emergency room at about 3:15 p.m. Monday. At 4:30 p.m., the hospital informed the Wayne County Sheriff's Office of the child's death.
According to the police report, the mother left the emergency room before the officers from the Sheriff's Office arrived at the hospital.
Final autopsy results will be released in several weeks, investigators said.
