With the rain coming down Wayne Christian was unable withstand a barrage of goals from Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference rival Friendship Christian in the first half.
The Falcons beat the Eagles 8-0 on Tuesday evening.
"My guys tried hard tonight," Wayne Christian head coach Patrick Schultze said. "It's frustrating for all of us, but we have to stay positive and know that days like this are learning opportunity.
"I told the kids that at the end of the day hard work beats talent and we just have work harder."
Wayne Christian was in trouble early as the Falcons flew out of the gate, scoring their first goal in the 3rd minute. Donavan Stell tallied a goal off of a corner kick by Josh Vazquez.
Three minutes later, Stell got the assist when he lofted a corner kick to Chase Gunter, who kicked the ball in.
In 12th minute, after Brian Jones failed to get a shot off inside the box, Gunter recovered the ball and ran down the field to score his second goal.
Friendship Christian went up 4-0 in the 27th minute. Stell crossed the ball into the box, Gunter came down with it and kicked the ball into the net complete his hat trick (three goals).
One minute later Garrett Huskey made a move to get past a few Wayne Christian defenders and goalie to kick the ball into the open net.
Friendship Christian scored again in the 36th and 37th minutes, and led 7-0 at halftime.
The young Eagles never stopped fighting, but at times they looked overwhelmed by the Falcons. They were limited to just two shots on goal in the first half.
"Friendship Christian has a pretty good team," Schultze said. "They played well tonight."
In the second half, Wayne Christian had plenty of opportunities to score but was unable to find the back of the net. Zach Brenner hit a free kick wide left in the 46th minute. Jones failed to convert a penalty kick in the 49th minute.
Connor Nelson scored in the 52nd minute off of an assist from Gunter.
In the 65th, Jones had a one-on-one breakaway with the Falcons' goalie, who blocked his shot.
"It's very easy to put your head down and quit at 7-0, but they didn't do that," Schultze said. "Sometimes it just doesn't go your way."
