CHAPEL HILL -- The N.C. High School Athletic Association stated in an email Tuesday morning that it is closely monitoring Hurricane Florence, currently a life-threatening Category 4 storm which is expected to arrive either late Thursday evening or early Friday morning.

Due to numerous phone calls and emails, the Association recommended that schools and districts pay attention to state officials and issues ordered from the Governor Roy Cooper's office, and local school policies.

Every decision should be made concerning the safety of all participants -- players, coaches, students, spectators and others.

School administrators who have questions about postponed contests should refer to the Association handbook. A decision to extend the regular season and push back the playoffs is premature at this time.

"We encourage all North Carolinians to take necessary precautions and follow safety guidelines issued by local and state governmental agencies," said Que Tucker, commissioner of the NCHSAA.

"Let us all make the right call by looking after ourselves, our families and our neighbors during the next several critical days in our state."
