PREP CROSS COUNTRY: Chargers sweep CPIC opener

Teammates Connor Bauer and Avery Best crossed the finish line first and second, respectively, and Wayne Country Day emerged as the top team in its Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference opener Monday afternoon.
The Chargers won the girls' team portion in dominating fashion with three runners placing among the top five and four in the top eight overall.
Bauer ran the 5k course in 19 minutes, 22 seconds. Best ended up 25 seconds behind Bauer. Teammates Cooper Edmondson (20:56), Brandon Talton (21:27) and Cairns Edmondson (21:42) claimed fifth, sixth and seventh.
Wayne Christian's Eli Winders claimed fourth in 20:28. Teammate Emanuel Newsome came in 16th.
WCDS compiled 21 points, followed by Friendship Christian (45) and Greenfield School (133).
Paige Court of Wayne Christian secured first place in the girls' race with a time of 23:32.
Wayne Country Day's pair of Danielle Johnson (23:39) and Gray Young (24:39) ended up second and third, respectively. The Eagles' Natalie Rheingruber seized fourth (25:05), while the Chargers' Anne Stuart Freemon was fifth in 25:54.
Hailey Verne of WCS logged a seventh-place time of 26:06.
The Chargers' Katherine Eltz was eighth in 26:49.
WCDS topped Friendship 28-55. Wayne Christian was third with 57 points.
