Wayne Country Day School's men's soccer is now 13-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in conference play after their 9-0 victory over Wayne Christian Tuesday evening.

Ben Cohen and Marquise Newell led scoring with two goals each for the Chargers. Marcus Metcalf, Christian Garloch, Bash Attiah, Luis Lopez and Dylan Brown each had one shot find the back of the net belonging to the Eagles.

Tuesday's match against WC is the 11th time 13 games that the Chargers have scored at least 7 goals.

They've invoked the mercy rule - a 9-0 victory - six times this season.

The Chargers will play their next match September 22 at Rocky Mount Academy.

The men's Golden Falcons suffered defeat at the hands of D.H. Conley Tuesday, losing two goals to one.

This is the only blemish on their record so far, bringing them to 7-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

South Central 1

The men's Warriors drew even with South Central Tuesday night, with each team netting one goal.

Alfredo Cabrera knocked the one goal home for Eastern Wayne.

This brings the Warriors' record to 3-34 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play.

VOLLEYBALL

Eastern Wayne 3,

Southern Wayne 1

Eastern Wayne took the day in Tuesday's match against Southern Wayne, winning 25-14, 25-18 and 25-16 and losing one set 25-19.

Three girls led the team to victory with Sophomore Rayven Smith getting 11 kills on the night, Senoir Brianna Autman getting 10 and Senior Emily Newsome knocking home 8.

Newsome also had 14 assists, while Senior Naomi Williams had 13.

"EWHS needed this win. We were trying new things in the 4 sets for confidence boost and they executed them very well. SWHS's serves were very different so they challenged us to adapt to each players unique serve," said coach Anna Hajjar. "Normally once we lost the third game, we would have kept getting down on ourselves. But they were able to climb out of that evil hole that they dug themselves. Normally they would just lie in it. I finally saw Warrior Volleyball and it is a huge relief."

Pope John Paul 0

Wayne Country Day School won Tuesday's match up against Pope John Paul in three hotly contested sets.

The Lady Chargers prevailed 25-23, 25-20 and 25-21.

Hannah Neal had 14 kills and Lillian Freeman had 10.

Katie Strickland had a well-rounded, diverse performance with 4 aces, 9 assists and 4 kills.

Goldsboro 3,

SWHS 0

The Lady Cougars clawed victory away from the Lady Saints Monday night in three sets, 25-20, 25-16 and 25-13.

Southern Wayne Senior Rebeccase Coor had 15 assists, while Sophomore Kya Hunter had 7 kills and Sophomore Alexus Elliott had 5 kills.

Parrot Academy 3,

Harrell's Christian 0

The APA ladies won in three straight sets Tuesday, scoring 25-9, 25-5 and 25-21.

The Patriots' record is now 14-0.

 Scarlet Combs showed strength at the net with 17 kills and 2 blocks, with sisters Alli Avery and Hannah Avery getting 9 and 8 kills, respectively.

Mackenzie Pope set her team up well for the win with 31 assists.

The Patriots host Cape Fear Academy Thursday.

Rosewood 3,

North Duplin 1

The Lady Eagles won in four sets Tuesday, 25-19, 25-11, 25-17 and 23-25.

Cassy King had 5 aces, while Anna Thornton had 3, Callie Thornton had 3, Alyssa Santos had 3 and Abbey Pate had 1.

Callie Thornton also had 7 kills, while Taylor Walker had 5, Kenzie Taylor had 4 and Santos had 3.

Anna Thornton carried the team with 16 assists.

This makes North Duplin's record 6-5 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

Spring Creek 3,

Greene Central 0

Spring Creek's Lady Gators won their math against Greene Central in three sets Tuesday, 25-22, 25-20 and 25-16.

Fernande Martinez, Virginia Edmonson and Madison Sullivan led the team to victory with a combination of key aces, kills and blocks.

Eastern Wayne 2

The Lady Bears defeated Eastern Wayne in Tuesday's match, winning five singles match ups and two doubles match ups.

In singles play, Mary Hoveland def. Bella Bowen 6-4, 6-3; Brynne McCormick def. Emily Stratton 6-2, 6-0; Paige Fountain def. Maddie Agner 6-2, 4-6, 10-7; Opal Moore def. Amelia Dunmire 5-7, 6-2, 10-7; Ava Bowen def. Megan Trucks 6-1, 6-3; and Julia Ensley def. Bess Gibson 6-2, 1-6, 10-8.

In doubles play, Mary Hoveland/Brynne McCormick def. Bella Bowen/Emily Stratton 8-4; Maddie Agner/Ava Bowen def. Paige Fountain/Megan Trucks 8-1; and Opal Moore/Julia Ensley def. Emily Stratton/Bess Gibson 8-5.

"Our team played another hard-fought match today coming up short," said EWHS coach Craig Hassell.  "Everyone competed and we were close to going up 4-2 in singles as opposed to being down 1-5 after coming up short on 3rd set tiebreakers.  Doubles also continues to improve as our players learn more positioning, strategy and consistency."

The Lady Chargers swept singles and doubles play Tuesday, winning each and every set.

South Central 5

The Lady Saints lost a hard fought match to South Central 5 to 4 Tuesday, with each team winning three sets a piece in singles play and South Central winning two doubles sets to Southern Wayne's one.

For the Lady Saints, MaryLee Heath, Morgan Skinner and Carla Senatus won their singles matches.

Doubles team Kayla Raynor and Morgan Skinner won their doubles match against South Central's Marisa Crisp and Raigan Mitchell.

Princeton 6,

Rosewood 3

Princeton defeated Rosewood Tuesday, winning four singles sets and two doubles sets.

Mackenzie Evans, Cailee Vetrano, Emily Shallington and Laura Lawhorn won the singles sets for the Princeton women, while the Shallington/Evans combo and Lawhorn combined with Brittany Creech won the doubles sets.

Goldsboro 2,

SWHS 1

The Junior Lady Saints performed the same as the varisty ladies, losing to Goldsboro in three sets.

Goldsboro won two sets 25-23 and 25-15, losing one 25-18.

Southern Wayne Freshman Abbey Parker had 15 assists, Freshman Morgan Kennedy had 9 kills, Freshman Alissa Meadows had 5 aces and 2 kills and Freshman Brittany Viehweger had 4 kills.

EWHS 1

Southern Wayne defeated Eastern Wayne in three sets Tuesday, 25-19, 25-18 and 15-25.

Ayanna Bynum led EWHS with 4 kills.

Spring Creek 2,

Greene Central 1

Spring Creek defeated Greene Central in three sets Tuesday, 25-22, 25-22 and 17-25.

Kloe Jordan and Taylor Smith led the team in aces, kills and digs.

Grantham 44,

Rosewood 20

Grantham Middle's football team bested Rosewood on Tuesday, with several key plays making it happen.

Terquavis Butler had two touchdowns, rushing 38 yards, and one two-point conversion. Terdarius Butler had a 60-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and a two-point conversion of his own.

Jylon Council had a 68-yard touchdown run, and Donshae Bozeman had a kickoff return of 70 yards for a touchdown.

Malachi Bass and Adam Cain both had a two-point conversion on the night.

This brings Grantham's record to 2-0 overall, while Rosewood falls to 0-2 overall.

Grantham plays again Wednesday, September 27.
