Faith Christian leads busy prep schedule

Faith Christian's varsity volleyball troupe -- out of action for over a week -- overcame a rocky start at the beginning of each set on Monday to post a 25-17, 25-13, 25-23 sweep of Northview Baptist Academy of Fayetteville.

The Conquerors struggled out of the gate, mishandling serve return in the opener and committing a run of unforced passing errors in the second.

"We could not handle the one back," said head coach Kasey Perry.

"That was a problem. We're used to having another team hit on us, and to have... it's pointless to have blockers at the net when they don't hit at all... so that was a struggle all the way around."

What was not a struggle, however, was the play of Connor Taylor.

Leading 1-0 and up 11-10 in the second set, the 8th-grader served to all spots on the floor and engineered a 13-0 run to close the affair and bring about the possibility of a sweep.

The final set witnessed more fluidity from both outfits, with Faith finally emerging victorious on a kill by sophomore Chloe Mills.

"It wasn't pretty," Perry said post-match. "You should not play down to someone else's level... it should hurt, and I think they were feeling it."

Now 2-5 on the season, FCA next faces league for Wilmington Christian in a road matchup today.

First serve is 4 p.m.

Sophomore Amanda Haggerty won in doubles and singles play on Monday, but it wasn't enough to push Spring Creek past new league foe Wallace-Rose Hill.

Haggerty teamed with Ivey Rouse to def. Jordan Maynor and Ariah Cooper in doubles, then turned back Maynor by a 6-1, 6-3 measure in singles.

She was joined by Rouse and senior Jordan Lane as the only SC players to register victories in singles play.
