Volleyball

D.H Conley 3,

EWHS 0

The Lady Warriors suffered defeat at the hands of the top team in the conference Thursday, losing in three sets 16-25, 17-25 and 18-25.

Emily Newsome and Brianna Autman led the team, getting 4 kills each. Bethany Williams had a hard fought game with 10 digs, and Newsome also chalked up 6 assists.

Coach Anna Hajjar said despite the loss, D.H. Conley is great competition for the team.

 "We played very well against the top team in the conference," Hajjar said. "We were consistent the whole time score wise. But during each sets we had some slumps. If we were able to push ourselves out of those slumps sooner, I'm not sure who would have won."

North Duplin 3,

Neuse Charter 2

North Duplin fought a victory away from Neuse Charter in a hotly-contested showdown Thursday.

The Lady Rebels took it home in five, scoring 25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 16-25 and 15-8.

Taylor Walker showed out strong with 13 kills, as did Anna Thornton and Cassy King with 6 aces each.

Thornton also notched 22 assists for the night.

This brings the Lady Rebels' overall record to 7-5, and conference record to 3-4.

Soccer

Greenfield 9,

Wayne Christian 0

Wayne Christian succumbed to the mercy rule against Greenfield Thursday, losing 9 goals to none.

Parker McIlvaine had 8 saves on the night.

J.H. Rose 4,

SWHS 1

Southern Wayne's Saints  fell to J.H. Rose 4 to 1 Thursday, with Shyquell Kornegay netting the team's only goal.

This brings the men's record to 3-4-3 overall and 1-1-1 in the conference.

Their next game is September 26 at home.

Golf

Wayne Christian, SWHS, C.B. Aycock, Rosewood, GHS

Wayne Christian School girls logged a team score of 152. Scores for the other four teams they competed against were not available by press time.

Eastern Wayne's junior ladies lost to D.H. Conley in two sets Thursday, 4-25 and 12-25.

Ayanna Bynum had one kill for the team. Mackenzie Ham had 4 digs on the night.

North Duplin 2,

Neuse Charter 1

The young Lady Rebels prevailed over Neuse Charter in three sets, 25-20, 20-25 and 25-17.

Hannah Martin led the team with 7 aces.

This brings North Duplin's record to 6-4 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

Middle School

Football

Mount Olive 26,

Brogden 20

Mount Olive middle's football team charged past Brogden Thursday, besting the team by 6 points.

Carlos Zamora ran the opening kickoff back for 70 yards to get the Chargers on the board right off the bat. He followed that performance by rushing 60 yards for yet another touchdown. To top off the triple crown performance, he snagged a 20 yard reception from Ian McIntyre for the third touchdown of the night.

Josh McCullen added some more points on the scoreboard, logging a rushing touchdown for the team. He led the defense with 7 tackles and a fumble recovery. Daylan Kornegay also had 7 tackles.

Mount Olive, now 1-1 in the conference, will go to Greenwood Middle next Wednesday.

Norwayne 40,

Spring Creek 0

Norwyane Middle's football team chalked up a decisive victory with 40 points to Spring Creek's zero.

Styles Kendall returned the kickoff for 60 yards for a touchdown, as well as a rushing touchdown.

Elisha Davis and Tylil Faison each had a rushing touchdown. Chase Hare got on the board by catching a 30 yard touchdown pass from QB Deontay Hooker.

This brings the Norwyane team's record to 2-0. They play again on  October 4.

Grantham 3,

EWMS 1

Grantham Middle bested Eastern Wayne Middle in four sets Thursday, 25-9, 25-20, 20-25 and 25-11.

Emma Proctor had 29 points, 1 kill and 7 aces. Allie Lane had 17 points, 5 kills and 9 aces. Katie Toler had 15 points, 1 kill and 7 aces.

Natalie Ham led scoring for Eastern Wayne with 17 points and 4 aces.

This brings Grantham's record to 3-1 overall, and brings Eastern Wayne to 2-2 overall.

Grantham goes to Greenwood Middle Monday for a non-conference game.
