WELLS FARGO CONFERENCE CUP: Rosewood places second in Carolina 1A race

CHAPEL HILL -- Rosewood emerged as the runner-up during competition for Wells Fargo Conference Cup in Carolina 1-A league play for 2016-17.

The Eagles compiled 78.5 points -- 9.5 less than Cup winner Hobbton. Rosewood emerged as the regular-season champion in baseball and men's outdoor track & field.

Princeton, the regular-season champ in softball, ended up third with 75 points. Lakewood took fourth with 70 points, followed by Spring Creek (66), James Kenan (56), North Duplin (50) and Neuse Charter (35.5).

SC shared the regular-season women's soccer crown with James Kenan. The Gators won their third straight title.

Goldsboro collected the men's regular-season tennis championship and girls' soccer crown on the Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference scene this spring. The Cougars placed fifth overall in the six-team league 395 points.

South Lenoir won the Cup.

In the split-classificiation Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference, Charles B. Aycock finished first among the three Wayne County schools with 71 points. Eastern Wayne, which took the men's 3-A tennis title, amassed 59.5 points.

Southern Wayne had 44.5 points.

D.H. Conley claimed the Cup.

The Wells Fargo Conference Cup recognizes schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performances within individual conferences. Each conference determines its own method for awarding points.
