Goldsboro anglers in third

MOREHEAD CITY -- The crew aboard Floar Plan landed a 426-pound blue marlin -- the third-largest fish hooked during the 59th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin tournament -- on Thursday afternoon.

Run Off is the leader in the Blue Marlin Division with a catch of 533.8 pounds. Weldors Ark is second after snagging a 484.9-pounder earlier this week.

Floar Plan, which is owned by Anthony Floars of Goldsboro, bumped White Caps to fourth place in the standings.

Owner Neil Hine, who hails from Goldsboro, took "Gambler-Hine" out of port and reported no activity for the day.

The BRBM concludes Saturday.

Baseball

Region 2 prevails

* GREENSBORO -- Cody Whaley and Jonathan Peacock combined for a shutout as Region 2 claimed a 5-0 victory over Region 4 in opening-round bracket play of the 2017 Powerade State Games of North Carolina on Thursday morning.

Whaley hurled four innings and earned the mound win. Peacock notched the save with two innings of relief work.

Jack Casbarro batted 1-for-2.

Region 2 returns to action this morning at 10 o'clock against Region 8 on the UNC Greensboro campus.

Bracket play in the eight-team event ends Saturday. The medal rounds are scheduled for Sunday.
