Dahlke honored

MOUNT OLIVE -- University of Mount Olive's Jonathan Dahlke has been named to the 2016-17 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District men's cross country/track and field team.

A psychology major, Dahlke captured his first-ever All-America honor with a sixth-place effort in the 3,000-meter run during the 2017 NCAA Division II indoor national track and field championship meet. He has amassed a total of 10 all-region honors between the 2016-17 cross country/indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.

Dahlke competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase preliminaries during the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field national championship meet Thursday evening.

CoSIDA recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. The first-, second- and third-team Academic All-America lists will be released June 22.

Golf team selected

HIGH POINT -- The University of Mount Olive men's golf team received the 2016-17 Conference Carolinas Spring Messick Team Sportsmanship Award.

The sportsmanship awards are presented annually to the member institution judged to have exhibited the highest degree of sportsmanship among its players, coaches and fans during their regular playing season. A student-athlete and coach work together to judge the sportsmanship of all conference competitors.

Each institution then submits those votes to the conference office, where averages are calculated to decide the winner for each conference-sponsored sport. The school with the best average, across all conference sports, will receive the overall Messick Sportsmanship Award at the end of the academic year.

UMOplaced sixth at the season-ending 2017 Conference Carolinas golf championships and placed two players -- John Thatch and Nick Adams -- on the all-conference team. The Trojans also won their own tournament, aptly named "The Trojan."

The individual award marks the University of Mount Olive's third team sportsmanship award over the 2016-17 academic year. Women's cross country and men's basketball were also named sportsmanship winners during the fall and winter seasons, respectively.
