Back-to-back.

For the second straight year, Wayne Country Day has claimed the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A Wells Fargo Cup -- an award that recognizes the top school in each classification with the best overall interscholastic athletic program.

The school will receive an engraved silver cup and a banner.

"The student-athletes have been great all year in the classroom and on the athletic field, court, track, trail and in the pool," said WCDS athletics director Michael Taylor. "It speaks volumes of our student-athletes to win the Cup again this year."

The Chargers reached the second round of the girls' soccer playoffs, and made semifinal-round appearances in baseball and boys' tennis.

Taylor made the announcement during the awards ceremony that concluded the winter and spring sports campaigns. Athletes were lauded for their efforts in 14 sports.

Ally Willman was named the female Sam Patrick Award (Life-Time Athlete) winner. Mitch Turnage and John Strickland shared the male award.

The Tom Jones Award (Fellowship Christian Athletes/Sportsmanship) went to Olivia Dively and Noah Adkins.

Aimee Barnes, who helped lead WCDS to its fourth consecutive NCISAA 1-A dual-team girls' tennis title last fall, earned the female Headmaster Scholar-Athlete Award. Mitch DeBoskey, one of the school's top golfers, received the male award.

WCDS had six students garner player-of-the-year accolades in their respective sport. There were five coaches-of-the-year and a total of 19 student-athletes drew nods on their respective all-state teams.

The Chargers won eight CPIC crowns.

"This has been a great year for WCDS atletics," Taylor said. "As I sit back and think about what we have accomplished, it is pretty crazy. I have the best coaches that work very hard to make sure that the student-athletes are having success on the court or field, and in classroom and they go the extra mile for their athletes.

"I am so honored to be the AD at Wayne Country Day, and thankful for all the coaches, parents and student-athletes."
