Surprise and humility.

Scott Summers and Charles Davis shared those emotions when they learned that their Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference peers had bestowed coach-of-the-year honors on each in their respective sport.

Summers guided Eastern Wayne girls' soccer team to a 15-7-1 record on the pitch this season. The Warriors claimed an opening-round playoff win for the first time since 2007.

"It is such an honor to be chosen as the coach-of-the-year," said Summers, who was named the 2003 ECC Player-of-the-Year while in an EW uniform.

"I give this award to my awesome team for all their hard work and for their outstanding season. I feel so blessed for the opportunity to be in this season."

Davis joked his award might have been a "parting gift."

But the 30-year veteran put another superb baseball squad on the field that helped its skipper earn his 500th career win -- a mercy-rule triumph over Southeastern Home School during the Tobs Classic.

The Golden Falcons' season ended with a second-round playoff loss to West Brunswick.

"Very humbling again," Davis said. "It means a lot that the coaches in our conference feel this way. We've got some really great coaches in our conference. RV (Ronald Vincent at Rose), Jason (Mills at D.H. Conley), Mike Ellsworth at New Bern, who I thought did a fantastic job with that club this year (and) Pat McRae to go in after "Peanut" Langston (at South Central) and do the job he did.

"Coaches don't win awards unless they have good players and good assistant coaches," Davis said. "They deserve that (honor) as much as I do."
