MOUNT OLIVE -- Caitlin Ewers knocked in the eventual game-winning run in the opener as University of Mount Olive split a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader against Limestone (S.C.) at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field on Sunday afternoon.
Ewers' RBI groundout helped lift the Trojans past the Saints, 3-1.
Limestone won the nightcap, 5-3.
Anna Ingram's lead-off double sparked a three-run second inning in game one. Jazmin Montgomery singled up the middle, but Ingram stayed at second. After a pinch-runner change, Callie Ferrell plated Ingram with a base hit to left center.
Ewers' followed with her run-scoring groundout and Charlene Thompson collected a fielder's choice RBI. The Saints' throw to the plate was not in time.
Madison Johnston emerged as the winning pitcher. She yielded one run, seven hits and recorded three strikeouts.
Limestone built a 5-0 lead in game two.
UMO answered with a three-run seventh inning that included an RBI single from Ewers, an RBI double from Kelsey Akers and Savannah Becker's RBI sacrifice fly.
Weather permitting, the Trojans (26-16 overall, 12-4 CC) conclude the home portion of their schedule Tuesday against in-state foe Chowan University. The doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
Women's lacrosse
FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. -- Claire Wigler and Alysha Kulka tallied four goals apiece as No. 17-ranked University of Mount Olive rolled past Emmanuel (Ga.) College, 17-3, in Conference Carolinas play Sunday afternoon.
Caitlin Sabadish and Brittany Barron provided two goals apiece. Caity Hamilton led the defense with two caused turnovers, one groundball and one draw control.
The Trojan women (10-4 overall, 5-1 CC) return home Thursday for a non-conference game against Queens University of Charlotte. Game time is 4 p.m. at Amon Field.
