The significant discussion took place on the short trip from Pikeville, across the Little River and to Rosewood.

C.B. Aycock's success depended upon its "absolute best effort to win over high-quality teams like Eastern Wayne and Rosewood. Superb performances were needed across the board."

Head coach Butch Bennett didn't need to worry.

The six-year title drought ended.

Trevor Holt emerged victorious in the shot put and discus, and Joseph Mooneyham is now a four-time WCTFC champion after the Golden Falcons pulled off a tension-filled 169-165.5 victory over Eastern Wayne on Monday afternoon.

Rosewood, the 2015 champion, collected 156 points. Southern Wayne amassed 45 points, followed by Spring Creek (28), Goldsboro High (23.5), Wayne Country Day (16) and Wayne Christian (1).

"Trevor continues to dominate the discus and shot put, just as he did in indoor track," Bennett said. "We can count on him for two first-place finishes in almost every meet."

But CBA's corps of distance runners helped carry the team championship back to the northwest part of the county. Mooneyham experienced little trouble in the one-mile (1,600-meter) and two-mile (3,200 meter) runs. In fact, he made both performances look as if -- well -- it took little effort.

The only obstacle -- running into a strong head wind for 110 meters on the back stretch. He also had deal with back cramps and said he may have been leaning back a little too far during his two-mile run.

"Brutal ... for sure," Mooneyham said. "I didn't have a time goal set (for the one mile and two mile), just kind of go for the win. Although, for the two-mile I wanted to be at least under 10:40 to set me up for a (conference) meet I have Wednesday (at New Bern).

"Yeah, I'm happy with what I did, kind of satisfied about my time especially on the one mile. I did better than I thought."

Mooneyham completed the race in 4 minutes, 52 seconds.

Teammate John Parrish seized first in the 800 run, which sparked a 1-2-3 finish by the Golden Falcons.

Eastern Wayne won seven events, including two relays.

Blake Hartsfield launched the Warriors' outstanding track afternoon with a meet-winning, blistering pace of 11.1 seconds in the 100-meter dash.

Rosewood's Mike Woodard took second in 11.62.

"It was pretty good. (Woodard) had me coming out of the block, kind of had me worried for a second but once I got midway, I started eating him up," Hartsfield said. "I could have done better if we had been on a better foundation. When you run on rubber, your spikes dig in the rubber versus when you're running on cement, it's kind of choppy."

Hartsfield won the 200 and ran the anchor leg on the Warriors' 4x1 relay that captured first in 44.4. He was joined by KK Best, Devonte Corum and Robert Gonzalez. Best, Corum, Gonzalez and Malyk Williams prevailed in the 4x2 relay.

"As soon as I got the baton, I knew we had this one in the bag," Gonzalez said of the 800 relay.

Best had first-place marks in the long and triple jumps. took the high jump. Tu'Alonzo Farrior claimed the 300 hurdles.

Rosewood had three individual champions -- Marquail Almontaser (110 hurdles), Zack Barnes (400) and pole vaulter Tanner Smith. Barnes finished state runner-up in the same event during the 2015 N.C. High School Athletic Association state championship meet.

The Eagles' foursome of Dalton Farmer, Montonio Wheeler, Ethan Chapin and Barnes captured the 4x4 relay in 3:43.1.
