Middle schools

* Boys' baseball: Norwayne 10, Grantham 0 -- Christian Brady swatted a home run as Norwayne launched its Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference season Monday afternoon. Blake Dilda, Clay Matthews and Hunter Theriac combined for the shutout on the mound. The Cobras (1-0 overall) face Greenwood on Thursday.

* Girls' soccer: Greenwood 1, Eastern Wayne 1 -- Amaya Labelli scored the T-Birds' lone goal during Monday's season-opening draw against the Warriors. Eboni Brown collected the assist. Greenwood (0-0-1 overall) plays host to Norwayne on Thursday.

* Softball: Ahoskie Ridgecroft 18, Wayne Christian 4 (5 inn.) -- Brianne Verme doubled twice in the Eagles' season opener. Verme also retired five Ahoskie batters on strikeouts and yielded nine hits during a four-inning stint inside the pitcher's circle. Abigail Kornegay tossed one inning of three-strikeout relief. Wayne Christian (0-1 overall) entertains Crossroads Christian today.

* Girls' soccer: Rosewood 9, Brogden 0 -- Malika Haines posted a hat trick (three goals) for the Eagles in their season-opening win. Sequoia Davis provided two goals and an assist. Riley Ryan delivered one goal and one assist. Morgan Haswell, Jamaya Artis and Abigail Villa supplied one goal apiece. Julissa Jaramillo and Hannah Adams combined for three assists. Rosewood (1-0-0 overall) takes on Spring Creek on Thursday.

* Girls' soccer: Dillard 2, Mount Olive 0 -- Dyamond George punched in two goals during Dillard's season-opening game Monday. Aaliyah Carroll recorded an assist. Goalie Octavia Barnes earned the shutout with eight saves between the pipes. Dillard (1-0-0 overall) travels to Wayne School of Engineering on Thursday.

* Girls' soccer: Norwayne 3, Grantham 1 -- Colleen Jones, Haley Martin and Morgan Quinn each scored a goal in the Cobras' season-opening match. NW keeper Katie Parrish collected five saves. Norwayne (1-0-0 overall) visits Greenwood on Thursday.
