La GRANGE -- Undefeated and unable to score early, Goldsboro trailed 11-0 in the first quarter before senior Myron Carmon sank a field goal Friday evening.

The Cougars warmed up offensively, but entered halftime without the lead for the first time this season.

"I don't think we were hungry to start the game," said Goldsboro head basketball coach Russell Stephens, whose team eventually claimed a 75-70 win in the Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference opener for both teams.

"Our guys got to realize, 'You got a target on your head. You come into this gym 12-0, that team is going to give you everything they got.' They (Hawks) were game for 32 minutes."

North Lenoir senior Lshawn Davis penetrated Goldsboro's full-court pressure, made a layup and drew a foul. He swished his free throw to give the Hawks a 52-50 lead after three quarters.

Goldsboro senior Kisheem Faison shot a 3-point dagger at the start of the fourth quarter to give the Cougars their second lead of the night.

Hawks sophomore William Sargeant drew a foul and made both free throws. Daveon Summerlin drove the baseline for two points.

The Hawks got within four points until Carmon stepped back three feet from the perimeter and buried a 3-pointer with five minutes left in regulation.

Carmon ended the game with 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Senior Eric Bufkin scored 16 points and was 8 for 8 from the free throw line. Faison added 11 points.

Davis recorded 24 points for the Hawks, and Summerlin had 14 points.

"Myron did what he's going to do," North Lenoir head coach Anthony Lofton said. "He hit that one from the tree stand over there. They (Cougars) hit them 3s. They had three big 3s, and that turned (the game)."

Goldsboro improved to 13-0.

"We needed it. We're glad we won when we got it," Stephens said. "It's time to move on and get ready for Kinston next week."
