Trojan men battle back, defeat Emmanuel; Trojan women fall

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. -- Mike Moore knocked down a game-winning 3-pointer with 21 seconds left, and University of Mount Olive completed a 72-69 comeback triumph over Conference Carolinas men's basketball foe Emmanuel (Ga.) College.

Moore finished with 13 points for the Trojans, who extended their win streak to six and handed the Lions (8-3 overall, 3-2 CC) their first defeat in their last nine outings.

Down by 19 early in the second half, preseason All-American Dontrell Brite ignited a 17-2 run with a 3-pointer. His 3-pointer around the seven-minute tied the game and Jacque Brown scored to put Mount Olive ahead, 60-58.

With 52 seconds left in regulation, UMO crashed the boards after a missed 3-pointer and Jamaal Matin pulled down the offensive rebound. He delivered the game-winning assist to Moore.

Brite emerged as the Trojans' top scorer with 19 points, followed by Dominique Reed with 14 points. Matin added 11 and Brown contributed 10 points.

Emmanuel owned advantages in every statistical category -- rebounds (38-23), assists (9-7), second-chance points (16-11), points in the paint (38-28) and fast-break points (28-21).

Women

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. -- Emmanuel College closed out the game with a 13-5 run and upended University of Mount Olive, 66-60, in a Conference Carolinas women's basketball game.

The Trojan women (5-6 overall, 3-2 CC) trailed 53-47 with 5:37 left to play before jumpers by Felicity Havens, Kiara Jones and Rachel Fehl knotted the score. Daria Simmons, who led the Trojans with 10 points, sank a pair of free throws with 3:21 remaining to cap an 8-0 run and put Mount Olive on top 55-53.

Jones just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

Emmanuel (7-4, 3-2) tied the game on a basket by Avery Scarborough and the Lions took the lead for good when Timia Reynolds stole the ball and scored the go-ahead layup with 2:28 left. The lead grew to seven before Havens hit a three-pointer for Mount Olive with five seconds remaining.

The Lions added a pair of free throws for the final score.

Daria Simmons emerged the lone UMO player in double figures with 10 points. The Lions held Aerial Johnson, who eventually fouled out, to five points and four rebounds.

Ni'Ya Styles and Rachel Fehl logged seven points apiece.

The Trojan women visit No. 8-ranked Limestone (S.C.), an Division II Elite Eight semifinalist last season, and North Greenville (S.C.) University next weekend.
