PIKEVILLE -- If there were only 40 minutes in a soccer game, Charles B. Aycock would have beaten New Bern 1-0 on Tuesday evening.

But the Bears walked away with a 3-1 win after engaging the Golden Falcons in a physical second half.

"I thought we executed well in the first half," said Golden Falcons' assistant coach Cory Worrell. "We just told them to keep on going, we're up 1-0, but 1-0 doesn't mean anything. It's a conference match. They're (New Bern) 4-A, we're 3-A. We want this win."

It showed.

CBA junior forward Zachary Zacharzuk assisted junior defenseman Joey Hampton with a score in the ninth minute. Senior fullback Jacob Norris had two headers that kept the Bears from scoring, and freshman goal keeper Skylar Landers made a defensive play with 20 seconds remaining in the first half that left the Bears scoreless.

However, 40 minutes remained.

New Bern's junior forward Daniel Rust scored on a free kick. Senior midfielder Neeko Helbich and junior forward Ryan Day each scored within the last 30 minutes of the game.

"Defensively, I thought we started out strong, then all of a sudden we started gambling," said Bears' head coach Tim Guter. "We had to chase backwards which created throw-ins for them (Golden Falcons) which they are very dangerous on."

The Bears travel to Conley on Thursday, while the Golden Falcons play at home against Rose.

"Another 4-A foe (Rose)," Worrell said. "We need to be an 80-minute team, not just a 40-minute team (or) a one-half team. Just play throughout the whole game."
