PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock assistant coach Tangela Faulkner stood at the edge of the court, telling her players to settle down in the final set.

They did.

Aycock closed out Eastern Wayne 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-15 in Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference play Thursday evening.

"They were missing key serves," Faulkner said. "They needed to fight back."

Leading the Warriors 13-8 in the fourth set, senior Abbie Walton ran off the court, hitting the ball over the net for a save. Junior Cyerra Carter had two blocks at the end of the set.

Carter ended the game with seven kills and seven blocks, while fellow sophomore Arlanda Faulkner had nine kills, three aces and 11 digs. Senior Alexis Bynum had seven kills, one ace and two blocks.

Senior Sydney Schmeltzer had four kills, four aces and 12 digs. Junior Taylor Daniels had five kills and three digs. Sophomore Cassandra Lassiter had 13 assists, and junior Tanika Powell had 12 assists.

"All of our players did well," said Aycock's coach Roy Harrell. "(Just) can't keep hitting into 'number 15 (Naheria Hamilton)'."

Hamilton, a senior, had seven kills and an impressive 10 blocks. Sophomore Brianna Autman had two kills and two block assists. Junior Jennifer Sparks had five digs.

Sophomore Emily Newsome had four kills, 10 assists and eight digs.

"We needed to keep the intensity," said Eastern Wayne head coach Jackie Lewis. "They had no doubt at 2-1. I told them to fight harder and play fundamentals. Hit our passes."

Eastern Wayne travels to Clinton on Monday. C.B. Aycock starts second-half ECC play next Thursday against Southern Wayne.
