C.B. Aycock's Mooneyham breaks school XC record

NEW BERN -- Charles B. Aycock Joseph Mooneyham broke a 12-year-old school record during an Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference meet contested Wednesday afternoon.

Mooneyham ran the 5k course in 17 minutes, 14 seconds, which surpassed the program's old mark of 17:21 set by Michael Scott during the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A eastern regional championship meet on Oct. 25, 2003.

Fellow Golden Falcons John Parrish (18:15) and Deshawn Owens (18:24) placed fourth and sixth, respectively. Hunter Crane (18:35) and Mitch Castorena (18:54) completed Aycock's team score of 43 points.

CBA head coach Butch Bennett said all 21 runners set personal best times.

New Bern won the meet with 41 points. The Bears' Parker White emerged as the top runner with a time of 16:33.

Eastern Wayne's top three finishers were freshman Rudy Spears (7th, 18:24), Zach Childers (38th, 19:41) and Noah Bernard (47th, 20:04).

Southern Wayne's Bless Thomas secured fifth place overall in 18:22. Teammate Cole Atwood crossed the finish line eighth in 18:27 and Anthony Womble shared 18th place in 18:54. Thomas and Atwood each recorded a personal best on the 3.1-mile layout.

On the girls' side, Eastern Wayne senior Fiona Pedrick won her fourth consecutive ECC meet with a time of 19:06 -- 23 seconds faster than runner-up Chloe Cox of South Central. The Warriors' next-highest competitor was Olivia Durfey, who placed 56th in 26:10.

Aycock's Sarah Gregory captured 20th overall in 21:47. Teammates Tara Price (22:51) and Mackenzie Stewart (23:04) took 22nd and 25th, respectively. Morgan Casey (39th, 24:29) and Georgia Parnell (58th, 26:13) rounded out the Golden Falcons' team score of 135.

Southern Wayne's Nadia Chesnutt placed 27th with a personal-best time 23:09. Teammates Amani Perez and Shamiya Best secured 45th and 49th place overall.

A total of 200 runners competed on the day.
