ROXBORO -- North Duplin's softball and baseball teams each advanced to the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A playoffs over the weekend.

Rylee Pate retired 15 batters on strikeouts, surrendered two hits and didn't walk a batter inside the pitcher's circle during a 7-1 triumph over Roxboro Community. The Rebels (14-3-1 overall) continue play Tuesday at Granville Central.

Haley Brogden smashed a three-run home run -- her only hit on the day -- in the top of the fifth inning to break open a one-run game. Pate, Mikayla Koch, Shaily McCarty (two RBI), Brooke Cottle and Haley Thurston provided one hit apiece.

Koch and Pate combined to score four runs.

Boone McNeil turned in a 3-for-3, three-RBI performance as the Rebels' baseball team continued its run with a 10-2 conquest of Martin Riverside. North Duplin (11-8) continues play Tuesday at Carolina Conference rival Rosewood.

First pitch is 7 p.m.

Winning pitcher Cedrick Kornegay and Trey Pate (three RBI) provided two hits apiece. Kaleb Brock (RBI), Hunter Thurston, Bryce Best, Hunter Jones (RBI) and DJ Morrisey (RBI) each provided one hit.

McNeil added a sacrifice fly and a stolen base. Emiliano Mora and Ricky Cameron combined to score three runs.

Kornegay tossed a complete-game five-hitter on the bump. He logged six strikeouts and surrendered two earned runs. The Rebels gave Kornegay some breathing room by scoring seven runs during a two-inning stretch.
