Tanner sisters, Crooks, Davis cop top awards during WCDS spring sports ceremony

Sisters Margaret and Crawford Tanner, Sarah Crooks and Joel Davis received the school's top accolades during the spring sports ceremony held in the Wayne Country Day gym Monday evening.

Margaret earned the Sam Patrick Award (Life-time Athlete). The senior, who plans to attend Auburn University, was also tabbed the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference female soccer player-of-the-year and grabbed a spot on the 2015 N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A all-state squad.

Crawford emerged as the female recipient of the Headmaster Scholar Athlete Award. Crooks, who has signed with Penn State Beaver, collected the Tom Jones Award (Fellowship of Christian Athletes/Sportsmanship). Cornell University signee Davis is the male recipienent of the Headmaster Scholar Athlete Award.

Steve Ellis was named the CPIC girls' soccer coach-of-the-year.

Athletes recognized in nine sports were:

* Varsity girls' soccer: Most Improved -- Hannah Neal; Team Player Award -- Margaret Tanner. All-CPIC -- M. Tanner, Langley Barnes, C. Tanner, Margaux Pope and Allison Bailey. NCISAA All-State -- M. Tanner, Barnes.

* JV girls' soccer: Team Player Award -- Ally Willman.

* Varsity boys' tennis: Most Improved -- Preston Edwards; Leadership Award -- Nolan Davis; Most Valuable Player -- Sam Dively. NCISAA All-State -- Dively, Edwards.

* Varsity baseball: Most Improved -- Patrick Hall; Coach's Award -- Parker Smith; Co-MVPs -- Mitch Turnage, John Strickland. NCISAA All-State -- Turnage.

* JV baseball: Team Before Self Award -- Cooper Edmundson; Coach's Award -- Jack Talton; Most Improved -- Caleb Brewer.

* Softball: Most Improved -- Cate Eagles; Defensive MVP -- Crooks. Offensive MVP -- Kate Thompson.

* Boys' golf: Leadership -- Lee McDonald; Most Improved -- Charlie Roethling; MVP -- Joey Democko.

* Track and Field: Boys' Coach's Award -- Jack Zhao; Girls' Coach's Award -- Payton Meadows.

During the winter, athletes received accolades in seven sports:

* Boys' swimming: Heart of a Champion Award -- Daniel Covert; Leadership Award -- Lance Davis.

* Girls' swimming: Heart of a Champion Award -- Kate Thompson; Leadership Award -- Allison Bailey.

* Middle school boys' basketball: Coach's Award -- Frank Best; Defensive player-of-the-year -- Nahemiya Shaw; Offensive player-of-the-year -- Sam Dively; Most Improved -- Tony Barbour.

* JV boys' basketball: Coach's Award -- Jack Talton; Defensive Award -- John Strickland; Offensive Award -- Marcus Metcalf; Most Improved -- Mitch Turnage.

* JV girls' basketball: Leadership Award -- Kaitlyn Daniels; Defensive player-of-the-year -- Destiny Williams; Offensive player-of-the-year -- Lexi Jeffreys; MVP -- Langley Barnes.

* Varsity girls' basketball: Coach's Award -- Hannah Neal; Most Improved -- Rebecca Edmondson; Offensive player-of-the-year -- Lillian Freeman; Defensive player-of-the-year -- Jasmine Jones.

* Varsity boys' basketball: Coach's Award -- Jackson Warren; Defensive player-of-the-year -- DJ Waters; Co-Offensive players-of-the-year -- Jamal Forde, Victor Miller. MVP -- Joel Davis. NCISAA All-State -- Davis.
