Rebels' Pate has 14-strikeout outing

CARTHAGE -- Rylee Pate struck out 14 batters in a complete-game shutout as North Duplin defeated Chatham Central 5-0 in the first of N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A state playoffs Wednesday.
Pate chipped in two hits and scored twice at the plate. Shaily McCarty had two hits and drove in two runs. Alyssa Santos and Haley Brogden each also drove in a run.
North Duplin will face Roxboro Community in the second round.
