PIKEVILLE -- Heavyweight Matt Teachey earned the match-clinching pin, and Charles B. Aycock launched its season with a 43-33 triumph over defending Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference champion New Bern on Wednesday evening.
"It was a close match all the way to the end," second-year CBA head coach Ronnie Allen said. "Our team never quit and did a great job overcoming some forfeits due to us not having anyone in our first two weight classes (106 and 113 pounds)."
The Bears held a slim 33-25 heading into the final three individual bouts.
Aycock's Chris Barbour drew a forfeit at 195 pounds and freshman Jileel Baldwin overcame from first-period nerves to pin his opponent. Teachey sealed the outcome with his pin.
"Jileel never quit," Allen said.
The Golden Falcons received victories from Tyler Marquard (120 pounds), Jacob Dickenson (126), two-time returning state qualifier Zach Howard (132), Josh Wallace (152) and Trent Marquard (160).
"(We) worked hard as a team to get this victory," Allen said.
