* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro Heat 65, Wilimington Cardinals 56 -- The Goldsboro Heat opened N.C. Home Education Athletic Conference South Division play with a 65-56 win over the Wilmington Cardinals. Gavin Portela led the Heat with 30 points and eight rebounds and three steals. Josiah Simmons chipped in 15 points and five boards and Cameron Yarbrough had 10 points. Harman Kaler had 11 rebounds and Jordan Carswell dished out nine assists.The Heat (1-1 overall) travel to South Wake on Friday.
* Boys' basketball: Wayne Christian 63, Community Christian 48 -- Austin Kornegay collected a double-double (35 points, 12 rebounds) in the Eagles' victory on the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference scene Tuesday. Jaxon Anderson contributed 11 points and six steals. Wayne Christian improved to 2-1 overall this season.
Middle schools
* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 39, Oakwood School 11 -- Sam Dively had 10 points and Nehemiya Shaw had eight in the Chargers' non-conference win Tuesday. WCDS (2-1 overall) plays host to Wilson Christian on Thursday.
