Princeton girls, boys are Carolina 1A cross country champions

NEWTON GROVE -- All-conference performers Jose Aguillon and Austin Sullivan helped lead Princeton to the 2014 Carolina 1-A Conference boys' cross country championship Tuesday afternoon.

Aguillon won the meet in 17 minutes, 58 seconds. Sullivan ran the 5k course in 18:10. Teammates Hunter Mitchell (6th, 19:27), Brent Hurst (7th, 19:43) and Jose Moreno (11th, 20:54) rounded out the Bulldogs' team total of 24 points -- 28 less than runner-up Hobbton.

Mitchell and Hurst earned spots on the seven-man all-Carolina Conference team along with Spring Creek senior Allen Coor (3rd, 18:34), Rosewood's Dalton Farmer (4th, 19:00) and Hobbton's Ivan Cruz (5th, 19:07).

Rosewood placed third in the team competition with 53 points, followed by Lakewood with 120. Ryan Miller led North Duplin's charge with a 37th-place time of 24:10.

Freshman Haley Thurston continued her season-long domination and earned all-conference honors with a first-place effort of 22:17. Princeton's Megan Evans took second in 23:12, followed by Rosewood's Elaina Amy (24:05) and North Duplin's Genesis Orellana (24:08).

Princeton's duo of Chelsea Hawley (24:22) and Altheia Balageo (24:32) crossed the line in fifth and sixth, respectively. The final all-conference spot went to Hobbton's Elvie Sumner, who concluded the meet with a time of 24:41.

The Bulldogs claimed the team championship with 36 points. North Duplin compiled 55 points, followed by Hobbton (72), Rosewood (75) and Lakewood (117).
