Preps digest: JV, middle schools

JV

* Football: New Bern 47, Eastern Wayne 0 -- Eastern wayne competed with New Bern for a half. But then fatigue wore on, as most players play both sides of the ball, and New Bern scored 33 points in the second half to win 47-0. Zerg Best had 56 yards rushing to lead the Warriors offensively. Justin Loftin-Russell had 72 yards receiving. Nick Richards and Leslie Swinson combined for 13 tackles on the defensive side of the ball.

* Boys' soccer: Wayne Christian 6, Christ Covenant 0 -- Freshman Jaxon Anderson recorded a hat trick (three goals) before the six-minute mark during the Eagles' regular-season finale Wednesday afternoon. Holden Foster converted a penalty kick and provided an assist. Skyler Price contributed one goal and one assist, while Drake Wise supplied one goal and one assist. WCS goalie Will White collected six saves between the pipes. Wayne Christian concluded the year 6-2.

* Volleyball: Princeton 2, North Duplin 0 -- Princeton defeated North Duplin 25-17, 25-15 on Thursday evening. Maddie Swinson had six digs and Anna Thornton had five assists to lead North Duplin.

* Volleyball: Rosewood 2, Spring Creek 0 -- Toree Marak and Mackenzie Little combined for eight aces to lead Rosewood past Spring Creek 25-17, 25-8 on Thursday. Kendall Gurley added five assists.

* Volleyball: Goldsboro 2, Kinston 1 -- Goldsboro beat Kinston 22-25, 26-24, 25-16 on Thursday evening. Tawanna Jones had seven kills and Juanita Cortes-Torres had five aces and five assists.

Middle schools

* Football: Mount Olive 22, Grantham 8 -- Jamari Leach led the Chargers with two rushing touchdowns, while Dylan Whitley rushed for a TD. Defensive standouts were Leach, Dorian Kornegay, Jeremiah Anderson and Shyeem Campbell. Taylor West recovered a fumble. Mount Olive travels to Brogden next Thursday.

* Football: Norwayne 34, Eastern Wayne 24 -- Xavier Eutsey ran a kickoff back 75 yards for a score and Norwayne had five different players score touchdowns in Norwayne's 34-24 win over Eastern Wayne. Josh Gooding, Quinn Cabeller, Devajhea Applewhite and David Bryant all scored rushing touchdowns. Cabellero and Jonas Creel each recovered fumbles for Norwayne. Norwayne hosts Spring Creek on Thursday.

* Football: Spring Creek 52, Brogden 14 -- Landon Smothers hit Dominique Morse for an 89-yard touchdown pass in Spring Creek's 52-14 throttling of Brogden. Morse scored two touchdowns on the ground as well. Javon Newsome, Jordan Ammons and Devontae Mitchell all scored touchdowns for the Gators, who improved to 3-1.

* Volleyball: Norwayne 2-2, Dillard 0-0 -- Norwayne swept Dillard 2-0, 2-0 in a doubleheader on Thursday. Norwayne won the first match 25-4, 25-13, and the second 25-12, 25-4. Norwayne improved to 8-1 and hosts Wayne School of Engineering on Monday.

* Volleyball: Wayne School of Engineering 3, Eastern Wayne 2 -- Wayne School of Engineering nearly let a two-set lead slip away before rallying in the fifth to beat Eastern Wayne 25-16, 25-20, 16-25, 18-25,15-6. Dakota Jones led WSE with four kills and seven aces. Nikki Olmstead chipped in five kills, and Marcy Taylor and Riley Howell each had five aces. WSE is 3-5 and takes on Norwayne on Monday.
