Trojan softball team sweeps in-state foe Pfeiffer U

MOUNT OLIVE -- The University of Mount Olive clinched a spot in the season-ending Conference Carolinas softball tournament with a doubleheader sweep of in-state foe Pfeiffer University on Wednesday afternoon.
The Trojans prevailed 6-5 and 4-0.
Ashleigh Mason's walk-off, RBI double capped the opener. Ewers tossed three innings of two-strikeout scoreless relief to earn the victory inside the pitcher's circle.
Mason batted 2-for-3 with two RBI in the nightcap as Mount Olive raced to a four-run advantage. Madison Johnston (8-8) scattered three hits and struck out two in a stellar complete-game shutout.
Mount Olive (18-24 overall, 6-6 CC) travels to archrival Barton today and concludes regular-season play at Lees-McRae on April 22.
Women's lacrosse
MOUNT OLIVE -- Riann Daziel, Michelle Fortier, Saffron Snethen scored three goals apiece as the University of Mount Olive concluded regular-season play with a 15-5 victory over Coker (S.C.) College at Amon Field on Wednesday evening.
Snethen scored UMO's final three goals of the match.
The Trojans became just the fourth team in NCAA Division II women's lacrosse history to compile 20 wins during its first two seasons.
Mount Olive (11-5 overall) returns home next Tuesday to face Converse (S.C.) College in opening-round play of the season-ending conference tournament. Game time is 4 p.m.
Men's volleyball
DUE WEST, S.C. -- University of Mount Olive squandered set points on two occasions and fell to top-seeded Erskine 20-25, 24-26, 25-27 in the Conference Carolinas tournament championship game Wednesday evening.
The Flying Fleet clinched the league's first-ever automatic bid to the NCAA men's volleyball championships, and travels to Chicago for a play-in game in late April.
Seniors Steven Cruse and Angel Dache earned all-tournament honors for UMO, which concluded the season 15-12 overall. Dache, who will graduate as the program's all-time career kills leader, cranked out 18 kills. Cruse provided 11 kills.
Lewis Einarson recorded five blocks. Quaid Marin handed out 36 assists.
