PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock and Eastern Wayne combined to qualify six players for the 2014 N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A eastern regional tennis championships.
The Warriors' Ethan Quinn emerged as the Eastern Carolina 3-A singles champion with a 6-1, 6-0 decision over the Golden Falcons' Stanton Head. Each player advanced to the regionals at Barton College in Wilson next week.
Aycock qualified a pair of doubles teams -- ECC champions Addison Vail-Allan Best and runners-up Chas Hooks-Jackson Yelverton. Vail-Best handed Hooks-Yelverton, who were the tournament's top seed, a 6-3, 6-4 defeat in the championship match.
The fifth-seeded Head opened singles play with an 8-1 decision over the Warriors' Andrew Baker. He followed that with a 6-4, 6-0 semifinal-round upset of Southern Wayne's Bobby Stocks, who was the No. 1 seed.
Quinn defeated Aycock's Nick Coston in the semifinals.
Hooks-Yelverton eliminated the Warriors' tandem of Gray Sasser-Kevin Larson in the semifinals, while Vail-Best ousted the third-seeded duo of Sam Biggs-Le Solomon.
