UMO stuns No. 7-ranked Pfeiffer in OT

MISENHEIMER -- Matt Shields notched the game-winning goal in overtime, and the University of Mount Olive upset No. 7-ranked Pfeiffer University, 11-10, in Conference Carolinas men's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon.
Dan Shields' game-tying goal with five seconds remaining in regulation helped the Trojans (10-2 overall, 2-1 CC) earn the program's first-ever win over a nationally-ranked team. Shields profited from Matt Shewey's assist and concluded the day with two goals and three assists.

Pfeiffer (8-2, 2-1) built a 10-7 lead on a man-up goal with 4:59 remaining in regulation. UMO's Stephen Bowlan scored off Luke Morris' assist 65 seconds later.
Brett Kington's man-up goal pulled the Trojans to within 10-9 with 89 seconds left in the contest. UMO keeper Ross Bowman, who logged 11 saves on the day, stopped a Pfeiffer shot.
Mount Olive failed to clear the ball and the Falcons ran the clock down to 20 seconds before burning a timeout. When play resumed, UMO forced a turnover which set the stage for Dan Shield's dramatic goal, which forced overtime.
The Trojans return home Saturday for their regular-season finale against in-state conference foe Belmont Abbey. Face-off is 2 p.m. at Amon Field.
Women's golf
TIGERVILLE, S.C. -- Julie Loennechen, Anne Barboteau and Lovisa Tillstrom each posted a top-10 individual finish and the University of Mount Olive emerged as the team champion during the Cliffs Women's Golf Intercollegiate hosted by North Greenville University.
Loennechen shared fourth place with a 157, while Barboteau placed sixth at 158. Tillstrom shot a 161 and jumped three spots into an eighth-place tie after opening-round play.
Emy Ohling (173) tied for 24th and Stefany King (183) finished 35th.
Mount Olive shot a 36-hole team score of 649 -- one stroke ahead of runner-up Milligan and first-day leader Erskine (S.C.) College. NGU ended up fourth.
The Trojans play host to a two-day tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Walnut Creek Country Club.
Men's volleyball
WILSON -- University of Mount Olive senior outside hitter Angel Dache recorded 23 kills, but archrival Barton pulled off a stunning 25-19, 18-25, 27-25, 19-25, 18-16 upset inside Wilson Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.
The Dogs halted the Trojans' seven-match win streak.
Dache committed just two errors in 41 attempts to become the sixth player in Trojan men's volleyball history to record at least 20 kills and a .500 hitting percentage in the same match. He added 10 digs defensively.
Steven Cruse added 14 kills and three service aces, while Garret Dimm finished with 10 kills. Lewis Einarson had a team-high five blocks.
Quaid Marin finished with 48 assists.
Mount Olive (13-11 overall) concluded its Conference Carolinas season at 10-4 and returns to action in the league tournament next week.
League accolade
HIGH POINT -- The University of Mount Olive's men's basketball team earned a Conference Carolinas Team Sportsmanship Award, according to votes placed by league coaches and student-athletes.
The award is presented annually to the member institution judged to have exhibited the highest degree of sportsmanhip among its players, coaches and fans during regular-season play. This is the third year of the team sportsmanship award.
Pfeiffer University won in women's basketball. North Greenville claimed men's and women's indoor track and field awards.
The school with the overall best average -- across all conference sports -- will receive the Messick Sportsmanship Award at the end of the academic year.
