Girls' basketball
Rosewood 55, C.B. Aycock 29
* PIKEVILLE -- Barely two minutes into the second quarter, first-year Charles B. Aycock head coach Ryan Wells walked toward the scorer's table and called for a timeout.
Kneeling in front of his players, Wells expressed his discontent from having his former team out-play the Golden Falcons on their home floor. But Aycock couldn't recover from its dismal start.
Sophomore guard Lexi Mercer poured in a season-high 30 points during the Eagles' 55-29, non-conference victory Friday evening. Rosewood (5-1 overall) swept the regular-season series.
"I thought we were pretty dad-gum good early, had some drives to the goal and had some run-outs which fueled the girls, I guess," first-year RHS head coach Rick Grantham said. "We pressed a little bit early because they are short a ball-handler or two. I thought we got a few rollovers (turnovers) and got going."
The Eagles built a 32-11 halftime lead on the strength of 19 turnovers, which led to 16 points. Mercer had 21 points by the break and exited with five-plus minutes remaining in the game. Her statline included nine steals, six rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot.
Alicia Burns provided 13 points in the middle two quarters. Krystal Yelverton supplied six points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals.
Rosewood had 20 steals as a team.

* DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne took control of the game in the second quarter and cruised to a 59-46 win over Smithfield-Selma on Friday night.

The second half was more of the same as the choppy play continued to favor the Saints.
