Wayne Country Day took advantage of one last opportunity to prepare itself for a test against No. 1-ranked Trinity Christian of Fayetteville tonight.

Lee Atkinson scored 21 points and the Chargers executed well on both ends of the floor in a 75-47, non-conference rout of Fayetteville Christian on Tuesday night. Joel Davis supplied 13 points and Marlon Coley had 12.

"This is one of the first times I've felt good about how we actually played," Wayne Country Day head coach David Flowers said. "Defensively, offensively we did everything we wanted to do. We're excited about (tonight.) We've played them once and they beat us pretty good.

"You're playing high-level competition. It's going to be fun."

Trinity defeated WCDS 73-48 on Nov. 21.

Against Fayetteville, the Chargers (9-2 overall) moved the ball effectively in the first half. Unselfish play led to quality looks at the basket as Wayne Country Day opened up a 32-16 lead midway through the second quarter.

The Chargers knocked down seven of their 12 3-pointers during the first two quarters. Wayne Country Day also converted easy layups in transition play.

"We started sharing the ball, but at the same time we weren't being too unselfish," Flowers said. "I thought they made good decisions. We have athletic ability, we just have to play smart and I thought they did that."

The Warriors were never able to make a run in the second half despite big man Nathan Hewitt's solid performance. Hewitt tallied 19 points and 12 rebounds.

The Chargers used a variety of defenses along with consistent pressure on the ball to force turnovers. Fayetteville Christian was outscored 55-35 over the final three quarters.

"I've told our guys the difference between a good team and a great team is one that plays defense," Flowers said. "I think now maybe they're starting to buy in to a little bit more and maybe they saw tonight that defense creates offense."
