Trojan spikers stay perfect in conference play

BELMONT -- Mount Olive extended its school-record winning streak to 12 matches with a 25-19, 25-21, 25-21 triumph over Conference Carolinas in-state foe Belmont Abbey on Tuesday evening.

Angel Dache delivered a game-high 17 kills for the Trojans, who swept their fifth consecutive opponent and remained perfect in 11 league outings this season. Adam Miracle supplied 12 kills and Alex Rivero chipped in 10.

Quaid Marin finished with 26 assists for the Trojans, while Ben Casado handed out 16. Senior libero Dan Arnold emerged the defensive leader with 12 digs.

MOC used a 6-0 run to break away in the opening set.

Miracle connected on a kill after a Belmont Abbey serving error. The Crusaders committed three straight attack errors and Lewis Einarson capped the surge with a kill.

Belmont Abbey climbed to within two points two occasions, but Dache's kill and back-to-back service aces closed out the set.

The Trojans nearly saw a five-point advantage evaporate in the second set. The Crusaders pulled to within 21-20. An attack error, an Einarson kill, a Rivero kill and Dache's solo block silenced Belmont Abbey's comeback attempt.

MOC fell behind in the third set and finally took control at 20-19 on Dache's kill. The Crusaders committed three straight errors to set up match point.

The Trojans (18-3 overall, 12-0 CC) play host to Limestone on Saturday. First serve is 2 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.

Women's golf

BLUFFTON, S.C. -- Mount Olive shaved 11 strokes off its first-round score, shattered the 18- and 36-hole school records and placed third overall in the Hilton Head Lakes Invitational on Tuesday.

The Trojans posted a second-day team total of 305 -- one shot off the lowest team round on the day and 10 strokes better than the previous program record of 315 fired at the Dana Rader Invitational nearly one year ago.

MOC ended the 36-hole event with a 621.

Emelie Andersson (150), Virginia Lane (151) and Julie Loennechen (153) each finished among the top 10 in individual action. Andersson, who tied for third, and Lane, who tied for fifth, earned spots on the all-tournament.

Loennechen tied for eighth place.

Also participating for MOC were Emy Ohling (167) and Stefany King (169).

The Trojans return to action next week at the Pinehurst Challenge, which is hosted by Wingate University.
