Gary leads MOC women; Trojan men fall in OT

RICHMOND, Va. -- Joneiqua Gary pumped in 20 points and Mount Olive College remained unbeaten with a 65-46 triumph over Virginia Union on Tuesday evening.

The Trojan women improved to 6-0 overall this season.

Gary hit five 3-pointers on seven attempts. Kirksten Mitchell provided 13 points. Tamara Nesmith flirted with a triple-double -- 12 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.

Alexandra Silva collected eight points.

MOC plays again Saturday at Conference Carolinas foe Coker (S.C.) College.

Men fall in OT

PEMBROKE -- Darrell Patterson led five players in double figures with 19 points, but Mount Olive College squandered a second-half lead and dropped a 96-89 overtime decision to in-state foe UNC Pembroke on Tuesday evening.

The Trojans suffered their fourth consecutive loss of the season.

Jordan McCain added 16 for Mount Olive, while Dory Hines chipped in 15. The Trojans also got big contributions from their bench. Kendall Hargrove reached double figures for the third consecutive contest, while Mahamed Ibrahim matched a season high with 13.

McCain's three-point play with 6:46 left in regulation fended off a UNC Pembroke spurt, but the Braves responded with a 15-5 run that tied the game at 75-75.

Hines put his team ahead again with a lay-up with 2:10 left, but the Trojans missed their final three attempts from the floor.

A jumper from Quamain Rose tied the game at 77-77 with 17 seconds remaining. An offensive foul by Mount Olive with three seconds left in regulation gave UNCP one final chance, but Shamel Brackett's jumper at the buzzer was off-target.

In the extra session, Hargrove made a pair of jumpers early, but Pembroke never trailed. Princeton High alum Ben Jacobs and Rose, who led all scorers with 26 points, each converted two free throws in the final 31 seconds to put the game away.

MOC (1-5 overall) returns to action Saturday at Conference Carolinas foe Coker (S.C.) College.
