Rosewood, Goldsboro separated by 1 point in conference Cup chase

CHAPEL HILL -- Rosewood holds a one-point advantage in the Wells Fargo Carolina 1-A Conference Cup competition after completion of the fall sports season.

The Eagles lead Goldsboro 20-19 despite not winning a regular-season championship. The Cougars won league titles in football, women's tennis and men's and women's cross country.

Princeton, which won its second straight women's volleyball crown, is third with 15.5 points. Spring Creek, which has claimed an unprecedented five consecutive men's soccer championships, ended up fourth with 14.5 points. Ayden-Grifton (13.5 points) and North Duplin (10.5) round out the six-team league.

James Kenan is front-runner among Tri-County 1-A Conference teams after seizing its first regular-season football title since 2008. The Tigers hold a 24.5-23 edge over county archrival Wallace-Rose Hill, which emerged the TCC men's soccer champion and finished runner-up in football.

Lakewood and Midway share third at 21.5 points. Pender (19.5 points), Hobbton (16.5), Union (16) and Heide Trask (14) round out the conference.
