Golden Falcons rebound from tough loss

WINTERVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock got a big win and rebounded from a tough loss on Saturday.

It was the continuation of a startling trend, however, for South Central that left its head coach frustrated almost beyond words.

The Golden Falcons scored eight runs in the top of the third inning and benefited from six South Central to post a 13-1, five-inning victory in the Pitt County Classic on Monday afternoon.

"We've been struggling this year," said CBA head coach Charles Davis, whose team dropped a narrow 2-0 decision to Nash Central Saturday night. "We just haven't been putting the ball in play and hitting the ball with any authority. We did that at times today, and, of course, South Central making six errors opened the door for us."

It didn't wake long for SC's day to go south. A throwing error allowed CBA lead-off hitter Adam Pate to reach first and eventually cross the plate on a sacrifice fly by Cameron Taylor later in the first inning.

Things went from bad to worse in the third. South Central committed four errors and gave up four hits that allowed Aycock to blow the game open and take a 9-1 advantage.

The Golden Falcons got a solo home run from Avery Anderson in the top of the fifth, then added three more runs to invoke the 10-run mercy rule and end the game. Justin Barbour and Cameron Taylor both had two RBI for Aycock, while Pate and Bryant Stafford added one apiece.

SC head coach Robert Langston, whose team has been outscored 25-2 and committed a combined 12 errors in its last two games, said an explanation was nearly impossible.

"There isn't a whole lot to say," he said bluntly. "We have come out not ready to play either (Saturday or Monday). You're not going to beat anybody committing six errors in a game and walking people like we have been. That's the bottom line."

Aycock (10-6) played Northwest Guilford today at South Central.
