MOC softball: Smith logs league-leading 10th shutout of season

FAYETTEVILLE -- Mount Olive College continued its season-ending road swing with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Fayetteville State University on Tuesday afternoon.
Christie Wright threw a complete game in the opener, an 8-1 win. Lauren Smith tossed her third consecutive shutout and Robbin Kennedy plated two runs in an 8-0 victory in the nightcap.
The Trojans (26-15 overall) batted around in the seventh inning to blow open a close game. MOC led 3-1, but the loaded the bases on Katie Moore's walk and consecutive singles from Rebekah McDaniel and Katie Devenuto.
Kayla Voorhees reached on an error, Elizabeth Overman walked to force in a run, Danielle Mitchell reached on another error and Kennedy singled home a pair with her third hit of the game.
Wright (5-6) kept the Lady Falcon line-up in check much of the game. She allowed just three singles in the contest. The run she allowed was unearned. She finished with nine strikeouts and no walks.
Smith (16-6) limited the Lady Falcons to just five hits, all singles, and struck out six. Her teammates got her all the support she needed in the top of the first with the help of two Fayetteville State errors. Kennedy singled and moved to third on a pair of errors, then scored on a wild pitch.
The Trojans held the 1-0 lead until the fifth when Mount Olive blew the game open. Megan Ready delivered a one-out bunt single and Kennedy walked. Both runners raced home on a double by Wright. Jennifer Jones' single stretched the lead to 4-0.
Smith has not been scored upon in her last five appearances and has a Conference Carolinas-leading 10 shutouts. She has tossed 14 complete games.
MOC concludes regular-season play this weekend with doubleheaders at King (Tenn.) College and in-state rival Lees-McRae on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
