Boys' basketball
Rosewood 60, Goldsboro 45
* Rosewood executed efficiently in its half-court offense and earned a critical 60-45 win over two-time defending Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season champion Goldsboro on Tuesday evening.
Zach Thornton paced the Eagles with 21 points. Joel Davis contributed 11 points. Jyonte Raynor and Dee Mabry both had 10.
"Rosewood did a great job executing their offense from the set," said Goldsboro High head coach Patrick Reynell. "They were able to work the ball around the perimeter and wait for a man to open up. I thought Thornton played extremely well on the low block and was physical, which made the difference on many plays."
Moses Ramsey scored 13 points for the Cougars and Julius Murphy had 10.
Rosewood (7-9 overall, 3-4 CC) travels to Spring Creek on Friday, while Goldsboro (13-7, 5-2) is the guest of Princeton.
Cleveland 58, C.B. Aycock 47
* PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock cut an 18-point deficit to single digits, but couldn't complete the comeback in a 58-47 loss to Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Cleveland on Tuesday.
The Golden Falcons' 12-2 run, capped by Cameron Johnson's 3-pointer, trimmed the Rams' margin to 39-31 late in the third quarter.
Johnson's free throws with a little more than two minutes to play pulled Aycock to within 51-44. Cleveland (5-15 overall, 3-7 ECC) sank five of eight free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
"We needed play in the first half like we did in the second half," Golden Falcons' head coach Steve Moats said. "We were trying to increase the speed of the game in the second half and it seemed to work fairly. We just have to convert on our offensive chances and we're not doing that."
Johnson led Aycock with 15 points and Derrick Loftin had 13 points. Chase Jackson scored 14 points for Cleveland. Austin Jacobs added 13 points and nine rebounds.
