HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Derek Staton tallied a game-high 23 points, including a pair of key 3-pointers in the second half, and Mount Olive defeated Coker College, 70-64, in a Conference Carolinas men's basketball game Wednesday evening.
The Trojans extended their win streak to six games. MOC (14-6 overall, 7-3 CC) shares the Eastern Division lead with Queens University of Charlotte.
Staton (12 points), Mahamed Ibrahim (12) and Craig Hayes (11) each reached double figures in the first half. Ibrahim and Hayes finished the night with17 points apiece.
The Cobras tied the game with 16:34 left in the second half, but the Trojans answered with a 13-5 run. Hayes' three-point play put MOC ahead for good and then Staton drained consecutive 3-pointers to boost the margin to eight points.
JUCO transfer Tamara Nesmith posted her fifth double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds and helped Mount Olive College turn back Coker, 58-44, in women's action.
Alyssa Luebs added 14 points, while Jasmine McDonald pulled down 10 boards for the Trojans. MOC (14-5 overall, 8-2 CC) gained sole possession of the East Division and leads archrival Barton College by half a game.
The Trojans have held six opponents below 55 points this season.
Mount Olive returns to action Saturday at in-state rival Belmont Abbey. The women tip off at 5:30 p.m.
