Boys' basketball

Wayne Country Day 63, East Wake Academy 22

* Wayne Country Day scored 23 unanswered points during a stretch of the first half and rolled to a 63-22, non-conference win over East Wake Academy on Wednesday night.

Deshar Thomas and Brandon McCarter led 11 different Chargers in the scoring column with 12 points each. McCarter pulled down nine rebounds and Thomas had seven. Hil Tanner supplied 11 points.

"We played with great intentional effort," Wayne Country Day head coach Terry Jones said. "We just wanted them to get loose and do things the right way, and still get some confidence and feel good about their performance."

A sizable lead allowed Jones to get valuable minutes for his younger players. The Chargers got 26 points from their bench. Jamal Forde supplied seven points, Dayton Meadows scored six and Kris Cooley had five.

"We've got some young guys who are really going to be strong coming up in the future," Jones said. "These guys practice together just about every day so that certainly helps. The future certainly looks bright and a large part of that is these juniors and seniors that we have now to push those younger guys on a daily basis."

Wayne Country Day visits Epiphany on Friday.

Rocky Mount Prep 66, Princeton 52

* ROCKY MOUNT -- Princeton could not keep up with offensive-minded Rocky Mount Prep in a 66-52, non-conference defeat Wednesday night.

CJ Jeffreys led the Dawgs with 11 points. AJ Smith finished with 10 points and Dalvin Stancil added eight points in the loss.

Princeton (11-10 overall) plays host to Goldsboro on Friday night.

Girls' basketball

Princeton 55,

Rocky Mount Prep 33

* ROCKY MOUNT -- Princeton got off to a hot start and never looked back in a 55-33, non-conference win over Rocky Mount Prep on Wednesday night.

Savanna Massengill led the Dawgs with 23 points and five rebounds. Nicole Melvin also finished in double figures with 10 points. Megan Gerrell tallied a season-high 12 assists in the win.

Princeton (12-7 overall) entertains Goldsboro on Friday night.

Middle schools

* Girls' basketball: Norwayne 34, Grantham 30 -- Taylor Daniels paced Norwayne with 15 points in a 34-30 win over Grantham on Wednesday night. Zaria Atkins led the Bulldogs with nine points. Norwayne (12-2 overall) plays host to Spring Creek today.
