Awards ceremony to honor area athletes

The Geeker Report, a free local monthly sports publication is having its official launch by sponsoring the inaugural Geeker Sports Achievement Awards.
The awards ceremony, which is also sponsored by the Wayne County Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force, the Wayne County Health Department and the Wayne County Action Teams for Community Health, is being held at 7 p.m. on April 5 at the Paramount Theater.
Tickets are free and are available at the Goldsboro Family YMCA, Christ Made a Way Barbershop and the W.A. Foster Center.
The inaugural awards ceremony will recognize male and female area high school basketball players from Wayne County Public Schools and Wayne Country Day.
Eric Vaughn, the founder of the Geeker Report, hopes to eventually expand the awards beyond basketball.
Some of the awards to be handed out include, player of the year, best shooter, best point guard, best defender, toughest player and best leader.
The awards were voted upon by area coaches, along with an advisory committee and Vaughn.
