Golden Falcons create some breathing room in league play

DUDLEY -- Charles B. Aycock took a while to get things going on Tuesday night.

Once the Golden Falcons' bats started clicking, everything seemed to fall into place. They pounded out 11 hits and scored two runs during a two-inning stint, and claimed a 9-1 win over Southern Wayne on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference baseball scene.

"We were able to hit a couple balls hard late in the game and that gave us some confidence," C.B. Aycock head coach Charles Davis said. "Southern Wayne made a couple errors and we were able to take advantage and turn those into runs."

Locked in a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning the Golden Falcons broke through in a big way.

Justin Barbour singled and moved into scoring position when Craig Murdock reached on an error. Cameron Taylor plated both runners when he reached on an error two batters later. John Taylor completed the three-run outburst with a sacrifice fly.

The Golden Falcons carried the momentum into the sixth inning and put the game away with a couple of home runs. Mick Walker led off the stanza with a solo blast in front of base hits by Barbour, Murdock, Cameron Taylor and John Taylor. Bryant Stafford put an exclamation point on the inning with a two-run home run, which gave the visitors a 9-0 lead.

"You can not give a good team extra outs by making errors and walking guys," Southern Wayne head coach Trae McKee said. "Tonight we did too much of both and it cost us. It went from a 3-0 game to a 9-0 game really quickly."

Southern Wayne got on the board with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but could not get back into contention.

Aaron Champion tossed six scoreless innings to earn the mound win for the Golden Falcons. Stafford provided one inning of relief.

"Aaron is a guy that is going to go out and battle every hitter," Davis said. "Even when he isn't his sharpest he is going to give us a chance to win and that is all I can ask as a coach."

C.B. Aycock (10-2 overall, 6-0 ECC) plays host to Triton on Friday. Weather permitting, Southern Wayne (8-4, 4-2) entertains Greene Central today.
