Southern Nash rallies past C.B. Aycock

BAILEY -- Southern Nash recorded three falls in the final three individual bouts and turned back Charles B. Aycock, 36-33, during a non-conference, wrestling match Tuesday evening.

The Golden Falcons (5-3 overall) seized a 15-point lead with four consecutive victories in the middle weights. Preston Tucker ignited Aycock's 21-point run with a fall over Davin Moore at 152 pounds. Khaleil Owens, who has a team-leading nine wins this season, pinned Josh Connie at 160.

"Khaleil continues to get better each time he hits the mat," said Golden Falcons head coach Marc Peck. "His efforts kept us in the fight tonight."

A.J. Barfield (171) pinned the Firebirds' Reggie Huff and 189-pounder Broc Doyle scored a nail-biting, 8-6 decision over Devin Denton.

Southern Nash emerged victorious at 215, heavyweight and 103 pounds to seal the comeback win.

The teams battled through three lead changes and three ties through the first eight individual matches. Aycock received victories from Jordan Bailey (119), David Romo (125) and Zeb Darden (140) during that stretch.

In the opening match, Rocky Mount raced to an 18-point advantage and handed Aycock a 45-30 loss. It was a rematch of last year's opening-round match won by the Golden Falcons in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A dual-team playoffs.

Siblings David (125) and Daniel Romo (130), Aaron Pate, Tucker, Owens and Travion Lewis each claimed an individual win.

"We got see where we stand tonight going up against two quality wrestling teams," said Peck. "Our young wrestlers continue to show a lot of promise, but we need to work staying off our backs."

Aycock returns to action Saturday in the 15th annual Eagle Invitational, the longest-running county individual tournament, which is hosted by Rosewood High School. Opening-round matches begin at 9:15 a.m.
