Queens records pair of one-goal victories over MOC in soccer

MOUNT OLIVE -- Colorado native Justin Ferguson converted a game-winning penalty kick in the 74th minute, and Queens edged Mount Olive, 3-2, in a Conference Carolinas men's soccer contest Saturday afternoon.

The Royals (4-3-0 overall, 3-1-0 CC) grabbed a 2-0, first-half lead on goals by Ferguson and Jeremy Chambers.

MOC answered with goals from Scott Mitchell and Matt Cargile.

It was the Trojans' fifth straight one-goal loss.

On the women's side, Queens (4-4-0, 4-0-0 CC) notched the game-winning goal in the final two minutes of regulation.

Lindsey Stanley and Sydney Frielinghausen each scored for the Trojans, who travel to Pfeiffer on Tuesday.

Volleyball

MOUNT OLIVE -- Erika Conner collected seven kills and four digs, but injury-riddled Mount Olive suffered a 16-25, 17-25, 11-25 loss to Erskine (S.C.) College on Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans (3-10 overall) fell to 1-4 against Conference Carolinas opposition this season.

Carly White added six kills and two blocks. Charnel Austin dished out 16 assists in the absence of senior setter Kailey Preece, who missed the match due to injury.

MOC entertains Barton on Wednesday.

Cross country

GRIMESLAND -- Mount Olive College finished second overall in team competition during the ECU Invitational contested Friday at Lake Kristi.

The Trojan men did not start their top six runners in the event. Jamar Davis emerged the team's top performer in the 8K with a ninth-place time of 29 minutes, 11.23 seconds.

Jordan Willett (11th), Erasmo Ordonez (12th), Ryan Henderson (13th) and Chris Etienne (14th) completed the Trojans' scoring. MOC tied Conference Carolinas archrival Barton for second place, but had the sixth-fastest runner compared to the Dogs.

ECU won the meet with a perfect score of 15.

On the women's side, Chelsea Long led the Trojans with a 10th-place finish in 19:45.51 in the 5K. Teammate Courtney Seifert ended up 16th. Chelyn McCain (18th), Christina Jordan (21st) and Jessica McKenna (22nd) rounded out the Trojans' scoring.

ECU defeated MOC 18-62.
