Norwayne finishes as runner-up in state golf tournament

BADIN -- Matt Simmons earned all-state honors and Norwayne Middle School finished runner-up in the 9th annual N.C. Middle School Championship golf tournament contested at Badin Inn Golf Club.

Simmons carded a two-day round of 144 after shooting 2-under par 69 on the opening day, and finished tied for third overall in the individual title chase. Wesley Simmons, Matt's brother, ended up tied for eighth after a 36-hole score of 146.

Norwayne and Ravenscroft concluded first-round play tied at 142 in the team chase. The Ravens edged the Cobras by two strokes, 146-148, on the final day to claim the team championship.

Joshua Martin of West Pine Middle successfully defended his boys' championship with a 36-hole score of 8-under par 134. Salisbury Academy's Isabella Rusher repeated as the girls' champion with a two-day total of 150.

The tournament is conducted by the Tarheel Youth Golf Association, a division of the Carolinas Golf Association.

* 12-Under: Mount Olive 35, Rosewood 28 -- Logan Ashen and Cameron Helt each scored two touchdowns for the Eagles, who trailed 21-7 at halftime. The Hurricanes notched the game-winning touchdown in the final 90 seconds of regulation.

* 8-Under: Mount Olive 24, Rosewood 20 -- The Hurricanes scored in the final 13 seconds to clinch the come-from-behind win. Amrei Atwell led the Eagles' offense with two touchdowns, while Trent Lancaster rushed for one TD. The Eagles' defensive leaders were Lancaster, Atwell, Colby Phillips, Brian Melgar and Jack White.
