JAMES TALBOT JEFFREYS JR.

James Talbot Jeffreys Jr. died Aug. 14, 2018 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

He was born Oct. 15, 1924, in Wayne County, the second of six children born to the late James Talbot Jeffreys and Gay Pugh Jeffreys.

Mr. Jeffreys attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and was a lifelong member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

He was married for 53 years to the late Lois Carolyn Taylor and he is survived by his four children, nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Mr. Jeffreys was president of Jeffreys Seed Company and served as president of the NC Seedsmen’s Association in 1961. He served on the board of directors of Wachovia Bank & Trust, New East Bankcorp, Wayne Memorial Hospital, Wayne County Public Library, and Wayne Country Day School. Mr. Jeffreys was elected to the Wayne County Board of Commissioners in 1968 and served for eight years, including two years as chairman of the board.

An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Jeffreys was a member of the Goldsboro Rod and Gun Club and loved nothing more than spending a day aboard his beloved “Seed Peddler” catching Spanish Mackerel off the N.C. coast.

In addition to his parents and wife, he is predeceased by his sisters Sara Gillam, Elizabeth Hubard, Virginia Jeffreys, Mary Ann Maxwell, and Irene Cornwell, and his son-in-law, Andy Lewis.

Mr. Jeffreys is survived by his children, James Talbot Jeffreys III, Lyn J. Lewis, Gay J. Elmore, and Edward Taylor Jeffreys and wife, Sandy. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Carolyn L. McGowan, Alison L. Nipper, Jennifer L. Brown, Kathryn J. Rowlett, Elizabeth J. Schmitt, Ellen G. Elmore, Morgan T. Jeffreys, Thomas E. Elmore IV, and Austin E. Jeffreys; and eight great-grandchildren; along with a host of nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Mr. Jeffreys’ life will be Satuday, Aug. 18, at 2 p.m. at St Stephen’s Episcopal Church, with a private graveside service to follow. The family will receive friends at Mr. Jeffreys’ home Friday, Aug. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m.
